I cant wait till I get my hands in that soil with the munchkins.

As New Engenders know, the weather is fickle. It could be 90 degrees one day, then
the next day we are wearing turtle necks.

Basically, if you get frost, it could wipe out your whole garden. So Plant by the date the last frost is expected instead of when the warm weather comes. Trust me on this one, as I have learned this lesson first hand.

The other thing that is a sure sign if your garden isn't going to work, is, uh, how can I say this without insulting people...OK, kids. That's right, those little munchkins you let out to play. They cant help themselves to play in the dirt or even pick those green tomatoes for you because for some reason they are under the assumption you forgot and was doing you a favor. The thought that they are suppose to be red, doesnt really cross their minds. (again, first hand experience with that one)

Plus, ever have a bouquet of yellow flowers from your munchkin and wonder where they got them from? well, if I were you, I'd check the veggie garden. Sometimes those yellow flowers are just right for picking and they look great in a vase. but the down side is you wont be getting any veggies this year.

Let's not forgot about the rabbits, deers, and all those wonderful critters that just love a good picnic now and then,a who can blame them? Though as much as you chase them away, they do have an issue with long term memory. Or, they just don't care, they love a nice picnic just like you.

One of the best ways to keep those critters out is to use a wire mesh and surround your garden. (pending on size of course) This will discourage most critters and some munchkins out of the garden. Oh, how could I forget your neighbors, who feel that your growing vegges for the whole neighborhood and feel they can just help themselves. What's odd is they think that harvesting them when the sun goes down is the best time to do that, but that's a whole other story. These mesh fences will keep the critters out and hopefully people will get the message that they are not welcome to help themselves.

What we did, because I am not a fan of a fence around my garden (but I might have to pending on the critters) is a raised bed. I used those landscaping timbers and raised them up and put top soil in it. It has kept the critters out, but not so much the munchkins.

ok, the raised bed is not so much for the critters, it was for my acking back, truth be told, its much easier to be one with the earth, when the earth is a little higher.

SO there you go folks, a few tips for you gardeners. Hope you could use it.

johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08659671063386445985noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1621813745596889666.post-28305549243084235112009-06-19T16:03:00.000-07:002009-06-19T16:21:19.460-07:00stop and smell the rosesThis blog is like watching grass grow. I guess there really is just so much you can say about a garden.

We have had so much rain lately, that we are not sure if our tomatoes will make it. even in the topsey turvy, the tomatoes are coming through but the plant as a whole is looking pretty bad.

So to make it a little more interesting, I though I'd post some pics of my everyday travels.

I am big on 'stop and smell the roses' and really try to live my life like that. this world we live in goes so fast and I am constantly telling myself to slow down.

So, with that said, there are sites that I see on a daily basis that I pass everyday, weather it be going to work, going to the movies, going to home depot, etc.

though you pass these views everyday, did you ever really slow down and stop and look how beautiful your daily travel is. It could be someones garden, it could be an old oak tree. Maybe it's a deer in the field, or how the clouds look on a specific day, it could even be in bumper bumper traffic on the highway and you open the window and just look at the highway, something you normally don't see because you drive on it so fast. something about really looking at the road sometimes seems surreal. (kinda weird, I know)

I'm a very visual person, can you tell...

anyway, I kinda want to start posting pictures that i see almost daily on my travels. To just leave for work a few minutes earlier to stop and take a quick pic, or maybe on the way to home depot, and say to the munchkins, "hey, look at that, lets take a picture" so they start to appreciate the beauty thats surronds us.

anyway, Lets all stop and smell the roses.

this was on my way home from work.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiF4omHosFKsNzsm13mKlt05C2-zEFANpJvp-5w1CaeR5inVVvZcyPZi-w6nsFz_wcpmwkBn-DVVs-7Rb-QDyzgF0vQlBwJEZGBqD_KalhXB8PFrqyIw1IsUUNbJh_LosMafQ-CVmgoEqM/s400/IMG_5137a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5349182715515410770" />

johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08659671063386445985noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1621813745596889666.post-2348256891708701592009-06-16T08:02:00.000-07:002009-06-16T08:09:28.880-07:00Parsley and more Parsley<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqOYiYrsBor4Z1qKhN_3d6-uLmEbqii_4VAlogvgsSGDbEQYkEYjJ0aHCNW6gTVPgSDgyDwcObeL92f2I07BNLmJDMijjXE3Oy9LKVCKWfeaccGxHfv4-BF3F0rvUvA-716rJ6gVtqH_Y/s320/IMG_5368.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5347941422933781234" /> Look at this parsley. It really is doing great. I wish I can say that for the rest of herbs. Last year it was the parsley that was doing horrible.

This years garden I think we jumped the gun. We had this heat wave and it felt like summer, which to the munchkins meant, 'garden time'. Especially little munchkin who loves this stuff. But then we got the cold front with some frost. Since then, nothing has really been growing the way it use to grow.

Plus, lets not even talk about the amount of rain this year. I think our poor veggies are just getting too much water. Unlike last year, where I was lucky enough to remember to water the poor things.

but hey, look at the parsley. Now what to do with parsley is a whole other topic.
johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08659671063386445985noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1621813745596889666.post-56102229267971000612009-06-15T16:43:00.000-07:002009-06-16T08:02:45.357-07:00Peppers<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpyFdAEJuuNOPhGoAzMKMEQvTNEfskxDAt2IAKLZkC2mmNYvBv9mB6iJ63d0cT_B3h8xzyOUXVBu8b6xiEzqhtol_J5CASQHlEh8lCrlczHhj_SdFF1knS8kEaCuP-FJRpusJqVGNsBj8/s320/IMG_5367.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5347940994750849874" />
It looks like the peppers are starting to come up. So I decided to buy this other kind of seed. It was cheap, so what the heck.

Well, so far nothing, its been 4 days since I put the seeds the out. It usually takes 24 hours till they come.

Just when I was about to dump the cheap seeds......

A yellow finch appeared. I guess everyone loves to grow tomatoes because there pretty much a good bet that you will get some good tasting tomatoes. They will grow in just about anything. They do love the sun though.

I would suggest that everyone grows organic. There is really no reason not to. Plus, when you start to get some tomatoes from your garden, you kinda feel pretty good about going organic. Kinda like the same feeling when you recycle your plastic/paper. You feel like your giving back.johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08659671063386445985noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1621813745596889666.post-18725620013626570902009-05-15T04:36:00.000-07:002009-05-17T11:17:48.366-07:00what your growin?Hi folks,

I know allot of people have asked what we are growing in the munchkin garden, well, OK, to be honest, one person asked, but doesn't it sound better when I said allot of people asked. I feel like an info-commercial.

now where was I? oh yea, what are we growing.

Here is our munchkin garden list:

tomatoes (lots of them) their always a sure bet.

Lettuce - never grew, but what the heck, this year our garden is bigger. wooo hoooo!

Cucumbers - have always grown, but always invaded the garden, but this year we are going to try to train them to go up on the cucumber cages that little Munchkin made. We will see how it goes. (he may be onto something, gotta contain them their suckers)

Beans - never grew, not sure what possessed us to grow them as we don't eat many beans here, but our neighbor (who we use all her gardening advice) told us they are easy to grow. So why not, we got the space now, did i forget to mention of the increase of our garden...whooooo hooooo.

onions - we eat allot of onions. We don't have much luck with onions, but since we like them, we keep trying.

as for our herbs:

parsley
rosemary
and thyme
(hmmmmmmm now i have Simon and Garfunkel in my head, even though we dont have sage, I just write whatever pops in my little pea brain and you all have to bare with it.)

We also have basil. I mean, how can you have herbs without the basil. I made allot of pesto last year, gotta love the pesto. yum yum yum

So there you go folks, our munchkin garden is complete, everything is planted.

"Just remember in the winter
far beneath the bitter snows
lies the seed
that with the sun's love
in the spring
becomes the rose"

or in munchkin lands garden, "becomes the tomato"

That's right folks, topsey turvey is already growing a little tomato, as the ones planted in the ground have not grown their flowers yet.

As the race is on, we will see what happens in the next couple of months. Who will grow the best tomatoes? who will sustain the harsh weather elements? who will not be eaten by unknown critters? who will survive?

Oh what do you want? I'm trying to make it a little more exciting then watching paint dry?johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08659671063386445985noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1621813745596889666.post-25292427277114845612009-05-12T06:24:00.001-07:002009-05-12T06:40:16.757-07:00I WON!!!!!!!!!!!OMG...can you believe it? It just so happens its on the Topsy Turvy.

I realize that we have to move those plants to a more sturdier hanger, I have to get little munchkin to build something.

As you can see in the previos pictures, i have been using traditional tomato cages. But I ran out.

I decided to have two cucumber plants. Which I swore I would not do , due to they attack my whole garden.

So little munchkin 'had an idea', he decided since its a 'vine' that it will grow up. But before I can buy another cage, he went into the shed and took some old fencing and made this.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmrAxl-rFyt-6khoztXBirr-rziTirFWgjQMY-xxOp1dXpDc7PwUPAcHbbQMXujbgE2X3lbAmSkcSutwDfcTieC7jsSjo7tG-t8eP0ax2x4s0-8_Vz9UNX9xiVaUrQpJyBE08Jfc-xZC0/s320/IMG_5033.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5333774676311819842" /><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikMtl42fTMv9DIwZvarUzfH2LhRebTht1FAmEg9BFeDQpGQlCvnXVFUOz9PFq28SGg6fyNFn79JnkoEn4bAbQKbh19UR7meICmxFG97h5t9MurkwIxvPfAUps7e69hBypLKwk4RgDGZac/s320/IMG_5032.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5333776797013782690" />

I actually like these cages better then the traditional ones. You can fold them up when your not using them. The only issue is that in a good wind storm, there gone, so we have to go buy some tent stakes to keep them down.

Here is another tip I have. To keep those cute bunnies and cute squirrels out of your garden. get yourself some marigolds. these little flowers have a smell that is not that pleasant to them and avoid entering your garden.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiue8lN_HJotie5kN9YeJvEjPcEd2DRgyYUZSqK2NVVm7MxlAlN8VOMKd1EMnlxR-6JK1p9bBEYFI5mCa5f2hUtfizTZ5iAnzcpx7LpcWQa-9IAKu_P1SKyPFd6OxMefkeVLkhXCVPKUhk/s320/IMG_5031.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5333777124286756146" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAQXxW5yefrLL7qEp8wDT4OBNfHArZTBPYVONk4UHYrJiWYgEaEKPBHs21v47nbmOIfWbje83nJLjRljYsDaDLSpaeirKEsMHnEaFF6Xk_M4WZXN-Lz9pGRUGJaX1n6S4qyBKFJrMTSlY/s320/IMG_5028.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5333776963828785186" />johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08659671063386445985noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1621813745596889666.post-54023225617663657062009-05-03T12:25:00.001-07:002009-05-10T13:58:11.096-07:00topsey turvy time<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAKUIZdY99l1g2-vNjGsXuW8LC_qc0nUGtKWH4Srd41_3K7kJ8TbgAxSOTQVhNaBhuByiWAxuGXtxIjPDG4jCxVY6okQQZ9n3vU3cPCC-xYUFQOQAz1eXC7odmm9jW_sawZkKH42AOe3k/s320/IMG_5025.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331683371493841442" />well, its topsey turvy time, which means we are trying to something new to grow our tomatoes. I saw this ad on TV last year and I just placed them in the shed.

when getting ready for this years garden, we went into the shed and saw the topsey turvy's. So I thought we would try it. Of course I planted my own tomatoes the old fashion way, so we will see what happens. Is it a gimmick? is it better then the old way?....we will have to see as I have them both going.

here are a couple of pics of munchkins garden. As i mentioned the lazy watering, you can see the black hose placed on top of the soil.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg5LmvSyOLc0k4Oxg6vz4WYP9z2D0TpsRGt5XDw6l6R8wCaxLXbndIg4-A01Df68X1zU9ICIEJXhCLGlPU_ArWquyIOFgz1TDrLSOENqvpW2lcuPtM28ktPeqRMFpfr1mS27W2GKo3bCw/s320/IMG_5024.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331682142229232466" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGqTu6FqucUDFVa0x7y9JRTa_TpCZv7fmbwcVVFSxY17uksirJqylCZhcmArcHCXgMr79sc4X9hsb-kNYRbVE72J9uWZk3bs7IN8mmiqtBr8-MdHXKNM4Mfolpv7iXxKqj0_iGbkH40c0/s320/IMG_5023.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5331682136454723202" />johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08659671063386445985noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1621813745596889666.post-85698113572593519752009-05-02T05:47:00.000-07:002009-05-02T09:59:30.149-07:00Lolas Garden Contest
http://www.lolasvictorygarden.blogspot.com/

I think this is another great way to start the munchkins garden blog. As we have increased the acreage of our garden from 8' x 8' to 8' x 16'. I tell you, we are cooking now...lol.

So here is a Tip coming from the Munchkins Garden.

Ever have soil that just seems dry. Kinda like soil that ants might live in. Well, to fix this problem, we at munchkin gardens feed the soil.

first we turn over the soil that's already there.

then we add 'fresh top soil'

then we add organic fertilized garden soil to create the nutrients for our veggies. (veggie cannot live on water alone)

then we added some peat moss.

then we mix it all up. The soil becomes so dark and rich with nutrients.

then you plant your seeds.

another tip the munchkins have, is that if you lay down a hose in your garden and set it to a timer, you never have to worry about if you watered your garden. (well, for people like me who cant remember where I put my car keys every morning, this is a good tip)

So come join in the contest. God only knows, the munchkins can use a little help as we embark on this adventure.

The good news, is this isn't one of those contests that requires you to do 10 different things in order to enter.

It's really simple. So click away: http://www.lolasvictorygarden.blogspot.com/

1. Create a post on your blog about your favorite Gardening Tip or Frugal Tip. Please note: All submissions must be in English, as I only speak/read English.
2. Include in your post Lola's Victory Garden Contest banner and link. Click HERE to copy the banner.
3. Leave a comment.
4. Come back to Lola's Victory Garden and at add the link to that post to Mr. Linky.johnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08659671063386445985noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1621813745596889666.post-81767310948290106502009-05-01T10:28:00.000-07:002009-05-01T10:53:18.852-07:00family foto fun friday

April Showers Bring May Flowers:

well, this is first real post and I am so happy it's participating in family foto fun friday.
